Texas Racing Commission Approves Texas Industry Plan

(Harlingen, TX) – – Valley Race Park announced today that it will hold a 36-day live greyhound race meet beginning on Friday, November 25, 2016.  The Texas Racing Commission approved the Harlingen, Texas racetrack’s racing schedule at its April meeting held last week in Austin.  The 36-day meet, which will kick off the day after Thanksgiving, will be the first live race meet held at the greyhound track since 2013 and the first extended meet since 2009.

“We are very excited to bring this particular live race meet to Valley Race Park,” said Valley Race Park President Andrea B. Young, “We have already received an unprecedented amount of interest from breeders and owners.  The purse structure and format will be extremely attractive.  We look forward to working with the City of Harlingen and the Texas Greyhound Association to put together a great meet.”

And … they’re off :Live greyhound racing coming back to Valley Race Park

HARLINGEN — Seven years after the dogs packed up and left, greyhound racing is returning to Valley Race Park.

Texas Racing Commission officials confirmed yesterday the park has been cleared to resume a full slate of live dog racing. The park has requested and been granted 36 racing days.

Employees at Valley Race Park say it isn’t known which dates the greyhounds will run.

But when they do, races will be held four days a week, with 10 races planned each day.

“The commission did grant some additional race dates to Valley Race Park,” Robert Elrod, spokesman for the commission, said yesterday. “They already had one scheduled for 2016 (Nov. 26) and the commission granted an additional 35. This is all the result of a plan the dog racing industry brought to the commission this week.”

Andrea Young, president of Valley Race Park Inc., requested dates be granted for racing from Nov. 25, 2016, and ending Feb. 4.

Condolences to the Brymer Family

Kalyn-Brymer-1456041647

Our condolences go to the Brymer family who lost their precious daughter, Kalyn, last Friday morning. We knew Kalyn at the TGA for several years; as she was a recipient of the TGA/Gulf Greyhound Park Scholarship Program for 2012, 2013 & 2014. We knew she was going to be successful in whatever she did and was very proud of her accomplishments, as I’m sure her parents were also. She was one of sweetest, kindest, most respectful young ladies that we’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Rest In Peace, sweet girl.

If you’d like to help, there is a GoFundMe page set up to help the family in the coming days and weeks to cover funeral and other expenses that may arise and for anything else that will help them. The Brymer family thanks you from the bottom of their hearts for the help, prayers and thoughts. God Bless. Click here to help support the Brymer Family!

Texas Racing Commission Nixes Historical Racing

The Texas Racing Commission voted 5-4 on Thursday to repeal rules allowing a new form of gambling, ending a monthslong deadlock that pitted members of the industry against state lawmakers.

The nine-member commission voted in 2014 to allow “historical racing” at racetracks, which involves betting on electronic simulations of old horse races with identifying information removed. The commission has been in conflict with the Legislature ever since.

Texas Will Race at Least Through February

Texas racetracks will be operating at least through the end of February, but beyond that the future is far from clear.

The Texas Racing Commission has been on shaky ground since September. Because of an ugly clash with state legislative leaders over an electronic game called historical racing, the commission has been limping along on operating funds doled out in 90-day increments.

Unless the commissioners repeal the rules it adopted in 2014 to implement historical racing, the racing commission could lose its funding Feb. 29—forcing a shutdown of live racing and simulcasting March 1. [Read more…]
